Role Title

Senior / Water Network Modeller


Based at Green Lane, Walsall


Salary circa £34,700 per annum (dependent upon skills and experience)


As an integral part of our Network Engineering operation, you will be exposed extensively to water distribution operations, hydraulic design/analysis and water network modelling, enabling you to produce high quality hydraulic models that support the Company’s operational planning, engineering design and investment strategy. At Senior Network Modeller level, the role also offers the challenge of project management working with external consultants as well as an opportunity to lead a small network team to deliver business objectives.


Educated to degree level in a technical or engineering discipline, you will have proven experience within the water industry and possess excellent IT and communication skills together with a flair for numeracy and problem solving.


For existing Water Network Modellers looking for further development, opportunities are also available to enhance existing skills and knowledge through sponsored training and support, part of which will be the opportunity to work within the CIWEM structured training programme, all with the aim of equipping you with the breadth of experience and knowledge required as a specialist. A full driving license for both roles is essential.


Key Accountabilities

Tasks
1. Network Model Construction

Produce high quality, robust, all mains hydraulic models, which will provide reliable support to operational planning, engineering design and investment strategy.

  • Assessment of system monitoring, asset performance, supply arrangements and enabling works to ensure the success of field tests
  • Extraction of GIS data, elimination of GIS anomalies and conversion to Infoworks model data
  • Extraction, analysis and allocation of Rapid customer billing data
  • Planning and execution of field tests to collect flow & pressure data essential for model calibration.
  • Analysis of leakage and domestic consumption
  • Calibration of models, to ensure that the model is highly representative of observed system performance.
  • Reporting on anomalies found, and overall system performance under average and peak day demands
  • Provision of supporting documentation, including study report, model user guide and model reference data.
  • Provision of training and support to model users within the department
2. Management / Support of external consultants

Project management of external consultants appointed to the network model build framework agreement.

  • Ensure that essential data is made available to the consultant at key stages in the programme, and apply quality assurance procedures to record the issue of data.
  • Assist with liaison between consultant and relevant personnel at SSW, to ensure appropriate level of client support.
  • Review the consultant’s submissions at key stages of the project, to ensure that the work submitted complies with the company’s requirements.
  • Authorise payments to the consultant on approval of work submissions.
  • Monitor the consultant’s progress against programme, and ensure delivery within acceptable timescales.
  • Review the consultant’s overall performance with regard to the award of further work under the framework agreement.
  • Determine the overall programme for the framework agreement, ensuring that the sequence of model builds aligns with the department’s objectives, and ensuring that work is adequately resourced through both internal and external resources.
3. Manage & develop staff

Develop the network modelling team to provide the capability to deliver its objectives.

  • Identify staffing requirements, recruit new team members and prepare role profiles
  • Provide line management including setting of objectives and performance management.
  • Provide a development plan for each team member, including a scheme for salary progression linked to achievement of milestones.
  • Provide the necessary training and support to enable team members to develop their roles.
  • Ensure that health and safety procedures are adhered to, with particular regard to work on site.
4. Model Maintenance
  • Develop and implement a model maintenance methodology to ensure that models are regularly updated to reflect changes in the system.
5. Support to other Units
  • Develop innovative applications of modelling, for example use of genetic algorithms for optimisation, & model-based tools to support the development of flushing plans.
6. Support to other Units

Promote the use of modelling to support other unit activities, including the following:

  • Short term operational planning
  • Developer enquiries
  • System development
  • System optimisation
  • Asset planning
  • Design support for network engineering
